Summer 2013 | RTX Traveler Magazine

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”

-Henry James

Ah, these summer afternoons.  When there’s time for long lunches with cold drinks on outdoor patios. When there’s time for a good book in your hands and your toes in the sand. When there’s time to watch your kids splashing in the pool. When there’s time for a long walk in the woods. These summer afternoons give us so much time to slow down and enjoy every lingering minute of the warm days and nights before the season turns and the fall chill begins to take them away from us. Mr. James clearly understood the magic of summer afternoons, and he was a bit of a traveler as well.

In this summer 2013 issue of RTX Traveler, we’ve reached from the southeast to the southwest to bring you highlights from two amazing destinations where our members can vacation, and make their own memories of summer afternoons. Of course, we found a lot to love about both destinations.

In Sedona, the wild desert and stunning red rock formations are reason enough to visit. There’s no place quite like this area, and to understand that, you must experience it. Hike the vortexes and meditate at the Amitabha Stupa. Have an adventure with Pink Jeep Tours and explore the communities surrounding Sedona from Flagstaff to Camp Verde to Jerome. By the time you’ve soaked it all in, you may find yourself changed by the place, even if only a little. Maybe it’s a greater respect for nature, or even a spiritual revelation. Either way, Sedona will stick with you.

If Sedona is about self-reflection, then Daytona provides opportunities to challenge oneself. A few days lounging on the beach is a given, but this is the perfect place to try something new. Stand up paddleboarding tours with Three Brothers Boards is something the whole family can enjoy. Climb all 203 stairs at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and feel the power of the wind from the observation deck. Go for the ultimate thrill and take a ride in a race car at 170 miles per hour around the Daytona International Speedway. After all that, there’s still time for shopping, dining and exploring the area’s cultural attractions.

The beauty of summer afternoons is that you can choose how to spend them, whether you’re at home or on vacation. This issue of RTX Traveler gives you just few ways you can spend your summer afternoons in our featured destinations. Enjoy the journey, and remember; it’s never too early to start thinking about how you’ll spend next summer’s afternoons.
