RTX Traveler Issue 24 | Jackson County, NC and South Padre Island, TX

One of my favorite things about living in Asheville, N.C., is that you can drive an hour or less in nearly any direction and be in a small town with big charm, surrounded by gorgeous scenery. When we want to hike, take the kayak on a new lake or river spot, seek out a different playground for our son or just enjoy a little daycation, we never have trouble finding a place to explore. It never fails that wherever we end up, we always find something even more interesting than the scenery – the people.

This issue features Jackson County, N.C., one of the areas that is near and dear to many of us who live in Asheville. Tucked in the southwestern corner of the state, most of the county is covered by the Nantahala National Forest, with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gorges State Park and Pisgah National Forest all nearby. It’s easy to see why much of the Jackson county feature focuses on the outdoors; however, the small towns and the people who make them thrive are a crucial part of the area’s draw. From coffee and cocktails with locals in Sylva to honey samples with the owners at Killer Bees Honey Farm, we credit the folks who live in the area as much as the natural beauty for making it a great place to visit.

We head farther south and quite a bit west for our South Padre Island feature. Here, we trade the mountains for sand dunes and the winding roads you can drive on for hours for the single 12.6 mile stretch of road on an island that is only ½ a mile wide. Despite seeming worlds apart, it’s not a huge leap to see similarities in these two destinations. The sand, sun and sea are obviously a big draw for visitors to this spring break escape, but go in the shoulder seasons to really get to the pulse of the place – meet people who make a living teaching others to build sandcastles, and the folks who run Sea Turtle, Inc., dedicating their lives to rescuing the area’s endangered sea turtles.
