Say No to Seasonal Depression | Winter Health Tips

The winter months can be dark and cold, often making us want to hibernate and even lowering energy levels and affecting our moods. Here are a few ways to combat the winter blues and stay happy and bright even when the weather is not.

CarbswDiet: Complex carbohydrates like whole grains and beans help boost serotonin, and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and nuts have been linked to good moods. Chocolate may always be a treat, and dark chocolate that is at least 70% cacao is a natural mood enhancer.

Vitamin D: Just 30 minutes of sunlight, especially first thing in the morning, can do wonders for your mood. Enjoy your breakfast and coffee on a sunny patio, or take a walk, even if it’s cloudy. Don’t forget sunscreen if the rays are strong, even in the cold.

DiarywHappy thoughts: Don’t just think them; write them down. Whether it’s a status update on your favorite social media site, a blog post or a good old fashioned pen-and-ink journal entry, writing about what makes you happy will help shape your mood in a positive way.

TreadmillwSweat it out: Exercise releases endorphins, which give you a natural sense of well-being. It doesn’t have to be an hour on the treadmill – play tag with the kids, throw a football with some friends, or take a stroll in a park.
