The Jazz Corner

With the feel of an intimate private club, all are welcome at this island gem that serves delectable dishes and entertaining tunes.

Hilton Head Island may not be known for its bustling nightlife, as most residents and visitors lean toward a more relaxed pace that follows the schedule of the sun. There is one spot locals and visitors from all walks frequent for a lively evening of music, dining and dancing. Tucked away in the corner of a shopping center on the William Hilton Parkway, The Jazz Corner has been a hub of dining and entertainment since 1999, with both traveling and house musicians putting on shows seven nights a week.

The Venue

The room itself is intimate, elegant and thoughtfully designed. All of the tables are placed in rows perpendicular to the slightly raised stage, so that no guest’s back is to the music. Two walls from the stage in front to the bar in back are lined with banquette seating, slightly raised for optimal viewing. A horseshoe-shaped bar in the back allows patrons to enjoy libations while still hearing the music.

Co-owner Bob Mastellar, who can be found performing on stage nearly every night, literally grew up on jazz as his father was a prominent musician in the early- to mid-1900s. Mastellar’s experience observing, learning and playing jazz as a child and throughout his adult life helped him truly understand what makes a great venue.

Designing an acoustically perfect room with well-tuned instruments in an environment comfortable for musicians and guests alike was the first goal when designing The Jazz Club, and that priority is evident. It is said that each note from each instrument sounds the same, regardless of where guests are sitting in the club.

It’s no secret to music aficionados that there’s more than one type of jazz; in fact, it is said that there are about 24 kinds. At The Jazz Corner, the focus is primarily on four kinds of jazz: traditional, swing, New Orleans and mainstream. The Club also has a bit more variety on the weekends with contemporary blues, rhythm and blues and Motown.

Musicians who take the stage might be featured artists backed by Mastellar’s All-Star band, a tribute act to any number of jazz legends or regional artists playing original music. Whatever is on the calendar, the audience is sure to enjoy experiencing music in such a unique and memorable place.

The Food

The only thing that competes with the music here is the menu. A variety of Southern specialties with local flavors ensures that guests will have mouths too full to talk during the performance.

Hilton HeadThere are abundant seafood options for each course, like the she-crab soup starter. Full of taste and packed with fresh crab meat, this low country classic has a sherry finish that is not too creamy. The salad with grilled pear, roasted beets and brie is incredibly flavorful, with the citrus from the pear balanced by the smoothness of the brie.

Among the many choices for entrees, the swordfish encrusted with mustard and herbs is delightful on its own, but is elevated to a new level with the accompaniments of blue crab and roasted tomato salad, refreshing broccolini with balsamic vinegar and lemon olive oil and rich Tillamook cheddar cheese grits. While it might be easy to over-indulge, saving room for dessert is well worth it at the first bite of the dark chocolate layer cake with ganache, with figs in a sweet balsamic and white chocolate sauce.

With stellar service, incredible music, delicious food and an amicable crowd, The Jazz Club is truly a highlight of any visit to Hilton Head Island.
