Tall Tales Tavern in Rangeley, Maine | RTX Traveler Magazine

Tall-Tales-MainWhen it comes to the freshest seafood this side of Maine, no other restaurant can touch the taste of the Tall Tales Tavern. Located on the way to the Height of Land scenic outlook from Rangeley Lake Resort, this local favorite is a must on your visit to Western Maine.

Though the building itself has been a storefront for 20 years, the Tall Tales Tavern recently reached its year and a half anniversary. Originally a fly fishing establishment named “House of Tall Tales,” the building was leveled and rebuilt using a portion of the previous name to preserve its historical significance. Now owned by four partner investors including executive chef Liz MacDonald and her husband Scott, the restaurant and bar serves the finest and freshest seafood complemented with local vegetables from the property’s own chef cultivated garden.

A first glance at the exterior may make this eatery seem misleadingly small, but the Tavern features a full dining room and separate bar with an array of seating options including rounded corner banquets and tables seating close to 40 patrons comfortably. This casual atmosphere is brought to life with rustic Rangeley memorabilia like the 12-foot wooden canoe suspended from the dining room ceiling and local art adorning each wall inspired by the area.

Lobster Roll WebThe tavern’s menu is seasonally shaped and a collaborative design between chef Liz and investor Karen Landis. Liz and partner chef Jessica Bolduck constantly serve up succulent dishes that keep vacationers and locals alike craving more. While Liz confesses she’s a huge oyster fan, she suggests sharing the two pound portion of Thai Chili Mussels as a starter when launching your Tall Tale dining experience.

There are no tall tales when it comes to the diners’ favorite menu picks. The blackened fish tacos, blackened haddock and Cajun fish Rueben get rave reviews, as do the chowders (or chowdahs if you want to sound local) and lobster (lobstah) rolls.

Adjacent to the Tavern is Scott’s Lobster Pound & Meat Market, which supplies fresh seafood and house-aged, hand-cut meats to the Tavern as well as many other area restaurants. Here you can purchase fresh clams, fish, lobster and more to take home and cook in the comfort of your cabin. Rangeley’s Tall Tales Tavern is the perfect place to enjoy a casual, fresh and delicious meal for lunch or dinner during your vacation to Rangeley Lake Resort.
