Proceeds from sales at all six of the stores help support the preservation, research and  educational programs of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, which means your excuse to spend is already provided. Start with a visit to the Williamsburg Craft House and browse through local folk art, ceramic and pewter gift ware and handmade jewelry before heading over to Everything Williamsburg for all the quintessential gifts such as t-shirts, coffee mugs and toys. If you know someone who loves to read or listen to music be sure to make a pit stop at Williamsburg Booksellers where 18th-century costumes, books and CD’s are available for purchase.

Merchant Square

145243372 webLocated on the west end of Duke of Gloucester Street just past the Bruton Parish Church is Merchant Square, an 18th-century style shopping complex that is home to more than 40 shops, an art gallery and a variety of mouth watering restaurants. Each Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon (March-Oct.) Merchant Square hosts the Williamsburg Farmers Market which was voted the #3 farmers market in the nation by the American Farmland Trust. After working up an appetite at the farmers market stop in at local favorite The Cheese Shop and select from more than 4,000 bottles of wine and 200 cheeses from around the world, or stroll across the street to DoG Street Pub where more than 16 craft beers are on tap and traditional English favorites such as fish and chips are served with a modern twist.

Shopping in Colonial Williamsburg offers a unique experience unlike any other; after all, it is the early to mid 1770s and tension fills the streets as the birth of a nation is just around the corner. That’s okay though as your main focus for the day is to check all the items off your shopping list. First, a stop at the Colonial Nursery where plants and herbs found in the 18th century along with clay pots are all available.

After taking care of all the purchases for the yard head over to the Golden Ball to find the perfect birthday, wedding or special occasion gift for a loved one. Colonial Williamsburg’s silversmiths hammer and sculpt brass, pewter and silver into one-of-a-kind pieces that can be hand-engraved to add that special personal touch. Choose from a variety of earrings, pendants and necklaces or opt for the popular “C-bands”  cuff bracelet.

Once acquiring that perfect gift for a loved one, head over to the Post Office and pick up an authentic postcard to write home to friends and let them know how your vacation is going. Of course good penmanship is required as you will have to use a quill pen dipped in ink tell all your tales.

Finally, time to check out all of the hottest fashion trends at the Mary Dickson Shop where only the most up-to-date petticoats, dresses, cloaks and beautiful straw hats are waiting to be tried on. Dress like it’s 1780 while all your friends are still wearing the fashion from 1775 with these locally made  garments.
