Carlsbad, California: The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

More than 50 acres of gorgeous color overlooks the Pacific Ocean when the famous ranunculus and gladioli are in bloom for six weeks from early March through early May each year. The endeavor began as one young man’s interest in growing flowers in 1933 and evolved into the leading grower of both kinds of flowers in the country, as well as a successful and iconic tourist attraction. Events during the blooming season like children’s activities, photography workshops and live music add to the experience.

Pine Mountain, Georgia: Callaway Gardens

While there are numerous attractions and activities at this favorite vacation complex, the gardens continue to fulfill the vision of its founders to create a place where people and nature could co-exist for the benefit of both. With two azalea gardens, a vegetable garden, a hydrangea garden and a garden featuring holly trees, flower lovers will be delighted at the variety and beauty found here. An impressive horticultural center with five acres of gardens and greenhouses ensures something is in bloom year round.

Murrells Inlet, South Carolina: Brookgreen Gardens

Just a few miles south of the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach is a serene sanctuary where art and nature combine to create a gorgeous outdoor space for the whole family to enjoy. Here, stunning sculptures are displayed among beautifully landscaped flowers, trees and bushes on a complex that encompasses more than 9,000 acres. From 300-year-old live oak trees that were planted in the 1700s to the seasonal perennials, shrubs, trees and vines throughout the gardens, this attraction is full of year round blooms.

North Carolina High Country: Wildflowers

For beautiful blooms in a more natural setting, the mountains of Western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Parkway offer spectacular sights when in season. Colorful flowers can appear as early as March and can last through August or later. One of the most popular is the Catawba or Carolina rhododendron, whose shades range from white to light pink to deep purple. Irises, azaleas, mountain laurel, dogwood and cone flower are among some of the other flowers that can be spotted on a drive or hike in the area.
