Rainy Day Fun

Sometimes even the most meticulously planned vacation can go awry, especially when unpredictable weather is a factor. Summer thunderstorms can put a damper on the day for even the most enthusiastic travelers, but there’s no need to let a little rain ruin the whole trip. Here are some ideas for rainy day fun that will get you out and about, or make the most of staying in.

Out & About

  • Museums: Depending on the age and interests of your family, museums in your vacation destination could provide enriching, educational and entertaining experiences for days when the weather keeps you indoors. Look for interactive exhibits, special events and activities or programs that can enhance the visit.
  • Arcades: An arcade is a great place to kill some time on a rainy day. Make it a game by letting the person with the most tokens choose that night’s dinner spot, or turn it into a team building experience where everyone combines their tokens or winnings for one shared prize.
  • Indoor Adventure: Indoor adventure centers are on trend, so check to see if your vacation destination has one prior to your visit and keep them in mind in case you need to escape stormy weather. Look for indoor climbing walls, water parks, mini golf and even indoor trampoline parks.

Staying In

  • Cook Off: Tap in to your inner foodie and enjoy a little healthy (and tasty) competition with your family. Pick a theme, like desserts, finger foods or make-your-own pizza and give edible awards (like favorite sweet treats) for categories like most creative, tastiest and best presentation.
  • Dinner & A Movie: If you’re lucky enough to find a movie that the whole family can agree on, pair it with an easy meal like pizza delivery. Get cozy with a pajama party or blanket fort and enjoy the show while staying out of the stormy weather.
  • Indoor Olympics: If you have little ones who need to burn some energy but you don’t want to create a mess, create a competition with challenges that are active yet contained, like limbo, coin toss, crabwalk, balancing on one leg and bowling (think plastic cups and balled-up socks).
