Panorama Out of Bounds
World class heli-skiing awaits you right at the resort’s front door

Imagine a perfect bluebird skiing day with endless fresh tracks laid out before you, gliding along in knee deep powder with an endless view of a thousand peaks stretched out before you.  In operation since 1970 with 100 drop zones and 370,000 acres filled with every type of terrain imaginable, RK Heliski provides phenomenal heli-skiing that will spoil the lift lines for you forever.

While heli-skiing conjures up images of people in movies and television being “extreme” and jumping out of a hovering helicopter over some impossibly tiny windswept drop zone, it’s actually catered to your specific skill level at RK. And no, you don’t jump out of the helicopter.

“It can be intimidating,” said Claire Henshaw, administrative and marketing manager for RK Heliski. “The terrain you see in the movies- is that the everyday terrain that we ski? Absolutely not.”

She said a guide is constantly with you and your group, and safety is of the utmost priority. All of the guides are Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and International Federation of Mountain Guides-certified and most have been guiding at RK Heliski for a decade or two.

“We encourage first timers here,” said Henshaw, who reported about half of the clients at RK are heli-skiing newcomers. “This is something for skiers to cross off their bucket list; it’s a fantastic experience.”

The numbers at the operation are impressive: RK boasts the highest landings of any heli-skiing operation in Canada. Some landing sites are over 10,000 feet, meaning you’re well above the tree line when you start your run. This gives skiers access to wide open Alpine slopes, scenic glaciers, and gladed forests, and the mild weather of the area means there are very few no-fly days.

RK is based out of Panorama Resort, with the helicopter pad adjacent to the village. In fact, skiers will probably see the choppers flying overhead to the backcountry area as they descend the slopes. In minutes, customers are immersed in total wilderness, with nary a memory of the lift line in their head.
