Kayak Hilton Head with Water-Dog Outfitters

A kayak excursion with Water-Dog Outfitters shows visitors the wet and wild side of Hilton Head Island.

On a Hilton Head Island vacation, there are many ways to enjoy the water. Splashing in the waves on the beach, taking a sunset cruise or climbing to the top of Harbourtown Lighthouse for the view of the ocean are all within easy reach on the island.

One way that many visitors and locals love to experience the water is to paddle through the creeks and marshes in a kayak. With a guided kayak tour from Water-Dog Outfitters, visitors are rewarded with stunning scenery, wildlife in native habitats and interesting information about the history, plants and animals on the island.

While Water-Dog offers a number of different excursions, the showcase tour is the Broad Creek Kayak Tour, a fantastic introduction to a unique aspect of the area. This two-hour tour entails a leisurely paddle on the safe, calm waters of Broad Creek. This tour runs daily beginning at 8:30 a.m. and leaving every two and a half hours until sunset.

Family1At low tide, get close enough to the oyster beds to see an oyster “spit,” and watch pelicans and osprey dive for fish while egrets search for insects and small crustaceans in the soft mud. When the tide is higher, wildlife may be slightly scarcer, but the group will be able to paddle into parts of the creek that are inaccessible at low tide. At any time during the tour, guests may be charmed by playful dolphins splashing nearby or bald eagles soaring overhead.

Water-Dog Outfitters’ owner David Fleming takes pride in providing tours that are fun, safe and educational and that also become a fond vacation memory the whole family will cherish. Fleming and his wife started giving tours on the island in 1998 and now can accommodate 10 to 12 guests on each tour, with approximately 15 guides leading tours during the high season.

With the calm waters, welcome breezes and careful instruction of the guides, guests of all ages and experience levels will enjoy kayaking among the saw grass, birds and sea life of Hilton Head. After a tour, enjoy a meal with a view at the Old Oyster Factory from where Water-Dog’s Broad Creek tours are based.
