Go South | Exploring the South End of SPI

If the windswept, vacant north end of South Padre Island is Mr. Hyde, the friendly south end would be Dr. Jekyll. Containing an awesome water park, restaurants, and a park with a surf break and fishing spots, the south end is a gathering spot year-round for visitors.

The fishing spot jutting out adjacent to the lovely Playa Blanca is called The Jetties, and the bramble of moss coated rocks guards the inlet into Laguna Madre. It’s a long, uneven walk to the end, but bring your pole at this popular angling area and you can catch redfish, cobia, mackerel, black drum, sheepshead and more at this productive stretch of water.

The Texas summer heat will force most to seek respite in the water, and for those who want a change of pace from the ocean, Schlitterbahn Waterpark beckons. Started in 1979, the Texas-based company now operates five outdoor and two indoor waterparks in Texas and Kansas City, Kansas. The park in South Padre is seasonally open, with a limited indoor section that is open year round. Try out the Transportainment river system, which connects nearly every ride and tube chute in the entire park! Soak in the cool lazy river water as you wait in line. Take that, Texas sun!

If you’re a surfer constantly on the search for tasty waves, the place you’re looking for in South Padre is Isla Blanca Beach Park. East facing, this spot collects long, consistent, peeling waves in the turquoise water. Get a lesson with South Padre Surf Company, offering everything from half hour budget lessons to surf camps, and even special needs surfing lessons.
