Cocoa Beach, FL | A Space Coast Gem

Find the best of Florida in this laid back beach town.

Florida has much to offer vacationers, and Cocoa Beach is ideal for families looking for a beach experience and so much more. Located nearly in the exact center of the area known as the Space Coast, the 50 miles of coastline between Titusville and Palm Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, at Cocoa Beach you can watch rocket launches, take a day trip to Orlando’s theme parks or become one with nature in an unspoiled wildlife refuge.

The town was the setting for the 1960’s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie,” and certain areas of town may still transport visitors back to that era. Of course, the beach is a main draw for all ages. Oceanfront accommodations are abundant and three beachfront parks offer free parking, clean restrooms, showers and other amenities for a day in the sand. Public playgrounds throughout town are great for helping the little ones burn some energy at the end of the day.

If you prefer to play on the water, there are endless opportunities for water sports. Send the kids to surf school, or try it yourself. Enjoy a kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding adventure with the entire family. For a family-friendly fishing charter, Captain Pete’s Lagoon Adventures combines wildlife viewing and exploring nature with fishing on their four hour tour.

Visitors who are looking for a bit of adventure have plenty to choose from. Airboat tours are typically associated with the Everglades, a bit further south in the panhandle state. But just a half hour from Cocoa Beach, Grasshopper Airboat Tours takes passengers to view wildlife on the St. John’s River, where you’ll glide over the surface of the water while you spot alligators, waterfowl and other wildlife.

For a fun day trip, check out the Forever Florida, where there’s something for everyone. Adults and children at least 8 years old can choose from three zip line experiences including a zip line “roller coaster,” a fun free fall and a long straightaway zip line. Children 10 at least 10 years old (and their parents) can hop on a trusty steed and take a scenic ride through a trail and a creek. Those too young for those adventures, or looking for something a little calmer, will love the wild coach adventure, an open-air safari coach that goes over land and water, and guests are elevated 5 feet off the ground.

After a day of exploration and play, stroll into downtown Cocoa Beach and check out the restaurants, shops and galleries. You’ll find juice bars and taco shops, clothing boutiques and surf shops, souvenir stores and glass studios, and more.  Kids will love the totally unique Dinosaur Store a few blocks north of downtown, with fossils, an Adventure Zone and (coming soon) the Museum of Dinosaurs and Ancient Cultures.

While there’s plenty to keep the entire family entertained in Cocoa Beach, just an hour’s drive inland will bring you to the heart of Orlando’s theme parks. Spend a day at your favorite park, and head back to the beach in the evening. With central Florida’s attractions so close, fresh seafood, a small town vibe and all of the things you love about a beach vacation, Cocoa Beach is truly the best of all worlds!
