Get Your Boogie On

Dune buggy adventures in Punta Cana.

The local Dominican accent turns dune “buggy” into “boogie” and the mispronunciation is so common, it’s entered into the island lexicon: you’ll see signs offering “boogie” rides all over. If you’re seeking a more relaxing boogie ride that’s convenient to the hotel zone in Bavaro Beach, head over to the Bavaro Adventure Park. It offers 15 family friendly activities, all in one area, so you can maximize your excursion time while on vacation. The ride itself is about an hour, in a pack of two-seat buggies that follow a mining road and enter into a gravel pit where there’s an adventure course with humps and berms to drive over. The buggies are well worn but capable, soaking up large ruts in the trail with their fat tires and off-road suspension. Continue on and stop at the coast, where blue waves crash onto the worn volcanic lava rocks.

After the ride, transition over to the horseback riding stable, a short walk away through a forest trail. Beginners are welcome to mount the steeds, as they are very gentle and accommodating. Trained caballeros will lead you on the 45-minute long ride, which goes along similar paths that the dune buggies traverse, although you won’t encounter or hear them. Lazily trot along and soak up the tropical weather as birds fly overhead.
