Lake Tahoe, California & Nevada | RTX Traveler Issue 23 | Gatlinburg, Tennessee & Lake Tahoe, California & Nevada

Lake Tahoe is an impressive body of water: sitting at 6,225 feet above sea level, it is North America’s largest alpine lake at 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, and it ranks 16th in the world for maximum lake depth at just over 1,600 feet deep. There’s enough water in there to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14 inches, but it’s at risk. Tahoe’s impressive clarity measured at 120 feet of visibility in the 1880s but has fallen to half that because of natural rainwater filters such as marshes and meadows being diminished due to developments around the lake. It’s estimated that the lake loses one foot of visibility per year, which is why conservation efforts such as Keep Tahoe Blue play such a crucial role in protecting this fragile ecosystem. Join us as we discover the otherworldly landscape that is Lake Tahoe.

Reno, Nevada provides a popular diversion to Lake Tahoe, full of contrasts to the relaxing destination one hour over the border- it’s a full-on desert gaming and entertainment town, high on excitement, bright lights, and cheap steak dinners. Indeed, “The Biggest Little City in the World” was coined as a nickname for the wide range of cosmopolitan amenities for a city its size.
